SOG SEAL Pup vs. Camillus Pilot Survival Knife / Ontario 499 ASEK review & demonstration

Which knife is better, the SOG SEAL Pup or the Camillus Pilot Survival Knife? They’re similar in size but differ greatly in weight and blade material. The Camillus is much heavier due to the awesome butt cap on the handle, and the SOG’s serrations are far superior to the saw teeth on the ASEK. The Camillus blade is 4-7/8″ long and is made of 1095 tool steel, which is easy to sharpen. The saw teeth on the spine work well on wire and nails, but fall short on cutting metal and plastic sheeting …

Instead of criticizing people’s knife reviews that they’ve worked so hard on, why don’t you make yourself useful and answer some of the questions we have, if you know SO much about knives. For example I want to know what is the difference between Camillus and Ontario. I have seen both company’s manufacture the same knife. Don’t bother posting another wise ass comment if you don’t know the answer to my question.

Okay…Camillus Cutlary Company is a completely different company than Ontario Knife Company. Since 2007, Camillus closed. It is possible that Ontario bought the design for one or some of their knives. More likely, you’re seeing similar patterns but different knives, unless Ontario specifically markets their knife as “Camillus.” But that’s a question about history and branding. I know about knife design.

I have no idea what’s going on, where did the ugliness come from? But I like the appearance of both, but I’ve personally used the ASEK, and it does a good job for what i need it for. I’m looking at the Seal Pup for consideration. Has a nice rep in some places in others not so much.

The blade material on the SOG SEAL PUP is poor quality. It’s too hard to keep get an edge on it. I’m going to buy a Cold Steel SRK and put them head-to-head in a future video.

The SRK has the same type steel in it as the SOG Seal Pup, but it does look promising.

Oh i liked the mods on the ASEK, BTW. :P

The new Ontario ASEK has some very nice new features. It is made from 1095 steel, partly serrated as is the SEAL PUP, has glass/plexiglass breaker, protective coating on the blade, saw back is much more aggresive, has glass/plexiglas breaker, kraton handle, spear and lanyard holes and comes with a strap/cord cutting tool with a flathead screw driver. It’s probably less expensive than the SEAL PUP too.

Dude, just get yourself a p-38 can opener. They cost no more than $1, are about 1 1/2 inch long and can go on your keys or a necklace.

I think the SOG SEAL PUP is used more for tactical purposes.

the saw bakc of the pilots knife are made for notching, not sawing…so they serve the purpose quite well. the serations on the SOG are made for cuting rope and webbing.

i have an old school personality. i would much rather have the camillus pilot survival knife. i like the leather sheath over kydex too. i also prefer all my fix blades to have a carbon steel blade.

The saw on the back is used for knotching not cutting.

  • By addancserpant, October 18, 2009 @ 1:33 pm

good idea on the camillus modification to the hand gaurd
I prefer the Pilot survival over the sealpup myself.
However I think the sealpup sheath is Jump certified and as such your less likely to loose the knife.
however simple modifications can be made that would make the pilot Survival more secure in the sheath

Thanks. I prefer the Pilot knife too. I like the straight edge and carbon steel much more than the AUS steel on the SOG. I’m all about my Cold Steel Recon Scout these days.

  • By addancserpant, October 19, 2009 @ 2:45 pm

The Recon Scout is an awesome performer and well worth the money. The recon scout really is just a shorter version of the trail master. I also really like the Cold Steel R1 Military Classic which is a Nam era Randal ( al mar knives) design.
I was saddened when Camillus a fantastic all American Company closed its doors for good in 2007 due to Bankruptcy.
I prefer a shorter blade myself as weight of kit is important and I would rather have another spare magazine over a larger knife

    NOOOOO!!!!!
the pilot knife has been around for 50 years so the saw blade on the back is there to cut aircraft aluminium at the time

thats why god stopped asking people if they want to be a boy or a girl… They kept saying “I don’t have to choose, I have both” lol

  • By RedJellyable, November 4, 2009 @ 5:55 am

i would have a glove on the hand thats holding the can your sawing as cut tin is deadly.

  • By Airsoft9eleven, November 6, 2009 @ 4:20 am

i was gonna get the SRK in stead of the ontario 499
but dammit cold steel changed the blade steel from carbon v to AUS-8
    ( I HATE AUS-8 )

  • By bikerpbl, November 6, 2009 @ 7:37 pm

nice video but i was like hell no when you were cutting the can with the sog

  • By littlejohn8178, November 8, 2009 @ 12:23 pm

I have both of those knives exept i have the sog seal pup elite love both of them but this video is right the sog seal pup is alot better.

  • By envirosponsible, November 9, 2009 @ 11:09 am

Do you have an SRK? Or have you used one? I wonder how both of these knives compare to it? Chad

  • By johnnytastetest, November 17, 2009 @ 9:21 pm

Tin isn’t a “synthetic material.” It’s on the periodic table.

Anyways, the knife in the leather case looks cooler.
