SOG Gov-Tac knife: Operator Choice

The excellent SOG Gov-Tac steps into to fill the void left by the loss SOG Government Agent in the SOG lineup. Like the Agent, the Gov-Tac makes a smart deployment knife choice, that is a knife thats well suited to LBE use by soldiers. A medium sized blade tactical and survival blade, the Gov-Tac offers a several advantages. At 13.4 oz carry weight, it is around 2.0 ounces lighter than most KaBars while still serving up a 6 blade. Made of AUS8 steel, this 6 inch blade offers excellent …

maybe you didnt fully read what i had written down. i never said anything about letting out more blood or doing more damage. i stated that i was designed to help in blade removal. also i put that this is a supposedly theory and i have no experience in this arena. try rereading what i put down before you give me negative feedback next time.

(Sigh) I did read your comment. Where was the negative feedback? I simply corrected your misunderstanding as well as the common misunderstanding about the ‘blood groove.’ In this comment section it is easy to seem like you are being a tool when you aren’t trying to.

    @Nutnfancy
shouldn’t the Ka-Bar be in the playlist as well?

  • By Firearm101, July 22, 2009 @ 9:18 am

Hey nutnfancy, what do you think of the Gerber LMF II Survival Knife?

  • By maltieskitten, July 22, 2009 @ 10:31 pm

    whats youre favorite knife?

  • By Deke101, July 23, 2009 @ 6:49 am

My favorite knife and the one I have used the most is the SOG SEAL Team 2000.
I have used it since 1998 and it is still going strong.

The tubelur ridges are used for strangth if it is machined pressed. For ie: if watch car fixing shows they will use it to strangthen weak metal like aluminum or thin gauge metal .But i don’t know about the ridges being dug in , it might give strangth.

All I have to say is: “Don’t watch Nutnfancy”, he’ll cost you money with his infectious enthusiasm. I just dropped 5 bills on a Sog Gov Tac, Benchmade McHenry Williams and an Edgepro Apex. On the plus side, I should be able to cut myself out of a wet paper bag henceforth.

Do you mean the knives aren’t sharp? I am thinking about purchasing one of those knives. Do tell.

  • By tanerofies, July 30, 2009 @ 10:27 am

Well, no telling exactly how sharp they’ll come, time will tell. However, every tool needs maintenance hence the sharpener. I suspect they’ll come brawler sharp but I’m hoping to get them to contender sharp.

Find a friend overseas and have them mail it to you maybe?

The grooves, or fullers, are not designed to add rigidity to a blade, but are instead designed to attempt to retain rigidity while decreasing weight. It does not seem like those would decrease the weight very much so are likely mostly aesthetic. The government is one of my all time favorite designs. AUS 6 should be tougher and more stain/chemical resistant. Supposed to be the equivelent of 440A vs 440C.

although I don’t use my knives as heavily as he does, I have a few gerber knives and I love them all, but for some reason nutnfancy never reviews them, I like my Gerbers better then my Kershaws that’s for sure and he has a few Kershaw reviews…

What sort of tang is used here? Full or narrow?

  • By r6v2man, September 21, 2009 @ 4:46 pm

i think the ridges are to eliminate suction when cutting or stabbing a person so it is easier to pull out

  • By CubworksLL, September 22, 2009 @ 8:04 pm

I am fairly sure it is full.

  • By lordbreakdown, October 3, 2009 @ 6:46 pm

I bought a sog gov agent when I was in high school. its got a satin blade.. I’ve never seen one since.. was that a rare configuration? or just an older version.. they all seem to be bead blast

  • By dhs012, October 6, 2009 @ 3:58 pm

Is this knife better than the sog seal team elite? If you already have one, could you also review the seal elite?

  • By mustangtyson, October 26, 2009 @ 9:11 pm

Great vid nutn, the lines in the blade are blood lines, i dont think they are for strength,, so if you can retract the blade from what you stab with it, It prevents the suction when you stab an animal.

Rub marks, sap stains, etc will come out fairly easily with honing compound, like the ubiquitous green or black. Of course it polishes a bit, and lessens the gray finish as well.

hey what i do to kinda keep my retenchen strap out of the way is when i put the knife away i button the strap around the back of the sheath just to manipulate the material a bit to automaticly get out of the way
