good god, that’s one beautiful blade.
By kagen0tenshi, April 12, 2009 @ 2:17 pm
Microtech is the best in automatic knifes
By apophysis7, April 18, 2009 @ 10:22 pm
I agree– everything else is a far distant second in my opinion. Recently tried a Piranha Excalibur and was very disappointed– particularly with the rattle of the blade within the handle when the blade was at rest. There are unfortunately a plethora of automatic knives on the market with overly-inflated claims and hype…… Microtech, however, remains one of the safer choices on the market. They continue to set the standard by which all automatics are judged and ultimately fail.

Buy a Microtech and share a clip someday.
Thanks for the comment!!

I agree. I recently ordered one of these. I plan on buying more microtechs in the future as well, but I was wondering, do you know anything about the Benchmade Infidel?
By cubixthe, June 6, 2009 @ 2:31 pm
Actually that knife is one big mistake
Fake Hamon… big ass white shitty logo – come on Microtech – it looks like a chinese copy ! And $499 for that?? COME ON!!!… They should focus on making some standard Halo2 and 3s , maybe then the price would go down.
By cubixthe, June 6, 2009 @ 2:34 pm
Oh and it’s NOT Hand Ground…
By apophysis7, June 6, 2009 @ 2:47 pm
I’ve seen other Halos, and I think this is among their better designs in the series. That logo is laser etched and the deployment and lockup are unparalleled in comparison to other OTFs.
The knife retails for $591.00. I don’t know where you got your figures but the $499.00 ones you saw elsewhere were PROBABLY THE CHINESE KNOCKOFFS YOU WERE REFERRING TO.
No cheap knife, as demonstrated in it’s operation here.
You are in my friends–hardly a friendly comment given your admiration for Microtech
By cubixthe, June 6, 2009 @ 2:54 pm
Hey Man, no offence! I’m not saying that Your knife is a chinese copy… I know these knives, they released Halos UT’s and Daytona katanas lately. I don’t have any doubts about the quality of the knife. It’s just the version that’s IMO very cheap looking. I really am a Microtech fan, but that doeasn’t mean that if they put out some dog shit on the market – I have to love it
It’s just my opinion, I don’t think a production halo with some laser work is worth 499, and certainly not $591……..

Well if you lived near me I’d let you check it out. I guarantee you’d be very impressed.
Wish I had your Halo 3– but those are long gone. I have to get what’s available from Microtech present day. For years all I had in OTFs was a Benchmade Auto Stryker– purchased it in ’99 and stolen in ’06.
Recently I began collecting Microtech after hearing eleven years ago what awesome blades they produced. So far I think a Makora, Ultratech and Halo II Katana is a good start.
By apophysis7, June 6, 2009 @ 3:14 pm
Correction– For years all I had in automatics was a Benchmade Auto Stryker– Auto Stryker being a side-opener.

I just bought a halo 3, and know where there is more…
By apophysis7, June 21, 2009 @ 7:56 pm
Send me a PM with specifics.
My collection isn’t complete without it.
By apophysis7, June 21, 2009 @ 8:09 pm
Despite roadsideimports beef with Benchmade, I feel they make decent knives.
Don’t know much personally about the Infidel OTF– I do however know the Benchmade Auto-Stryker to be a great side opening knife. I purchased my Auto-Stryker in 1999 and relied on it until the year it was stolen seven years later. Up until 2006 it worked dependably.
If I were you I’d buy Spyderco and Microtech– as these from my experience deliver and stand behind their products better than most companies these days.
By apophysis7, June 21, 2009 @ 8:16 pm
And if you’re going for knives with the coolness factor and most aggressive blade designs– and a great overall value– then Cold Steel is another great option.
But to remain on point, Microtech should be your primary focus. If you are interested at all in side-opening automatics I recently purchased a Spyderco Embassy and love it.
Thanks for the question and comment.

Message me as well, I’d love to know where to get a Halo III..
By nate3993, August 4, 2009 @ 9:32 pm
sorry but, this is one of the 3 knives i think youve grossly overpaid for-all the katana series=i mean, if it cost as much or even more than a fully custom knife, and the knife is only machined, its a rip off-but that’s just MHO
By apophysis7, August 4, 2009 @ 9:49 pm
Well I don’t know what custom knives you are referring to exactly– but $400-600 dollars is definitely the low end of custom knives. You presume to know what I’ve paid for my Katana knives, yet dealer prices can vary substantially.
I’d say a grand minimum, on up is what finer custom knives command these days. BG-42 and S30V being the choice blade materials. I personally wouldn’t want a fully custom knife in the $400 dollar range.
By nate3993, August 4, 2009 @ 9:55 pm
finer custom have to be 1000 dollar range and finer means S30V? how about this-greg lightfoot has many folder for 495 in BG-42. Les voorhies-425-450 in CPM-154great blade steel btw- or how about this-i getting a fully custom reese weiland knife- 3.6 inch blade of CPM-3V-, full Ti locking side and on the other side carbon fiber-both the Ti and carbon fiber is radiused-all for around 500-Reese is NOT an amateur-so, there you go-i think i made my point
By nate3993, August 4, 2009 @ 10:00 pm
hows a 3.6 inch hollow ground blade of CPM-3V and carbon fiber by a known, talented maker for a fine custom? not machined like those microtechs-no hand work is put into those bud.and does it cost a grand? nope-almost exactly half-sorry to come off as rude, but i think I make a dam good point
By apophysis7, August 4, 2009 @ 10:27 pm
Well the knives I’m focusing on now are Steve Ryan and Ken Onion customs. Ken’s stuff is really hard to come by– and that of course is to the exclusion of any of his collaborations with Kershaw.
Thanks for giving me the heads up on customs delivering the most for under $1,000.
Microtechs are pricey– and even their “custom” stuff averages at around $2,000. Even those pieces are almost entirely produced by machine. The only custom part is the personally hand ground blade from A. Marfione.
By ColdDeath1332, August 18, 2009 @ 6:26 am
microtech is pricey and its kind of dumb because your buying the name and they are so pricey because no other company makes otf knives and switchblades as much as microtech… ill prolly buy some microtech in the future but 400 dollars for what i can do with a kitchen knife?
