About the pronunciation of the word tanto, there is actually only one way to properly pronounce it. “Tahn-to”. It’s a Japanese word, and unlike the English language the Japanese phonetic language has no leniency. A character is pronounced one way and that’s it, doesn’t matter what comes before or after it.

Now, That said, I don’t actually CARE how you pronounce it, but you said it’s personal preference and there is no right and wrong, which was well, wrong. Lol.

Great videos man, keep it up.

2 things: They are Omega Springs, and there is one on both sides, so if one breaks, it usually still functions great until sent in. Lifetime Warranty! Second, 580/585 Barrage are new Axist-Assist knives :)

Thanks for the detalied review of the 553. The omega springs broke off my Griptilian 553. Sent it back to Benchmade for repairs. Dianna replaced the springs, stripped screws, the clip which was scratched, and was cleaned and sharpened. Benchmade has awesome lifetime warranty. Dope knife.

I think the only thing an American-style tanto is useful for is piercing and scraping.

hey man, just for reference does the tanto blade on the knife have an edge on each side of the blade?

  • By enduserx, December 26, 2009 @ 11:25 pm

The 553 is Blue Class. Made in the USA.

  • By JoeShmoe2002, December 29, 2009 @ 3:00 pm

Cutlery Lover, I feel almost EXACTLY the same!

Mine is also a 553 and if I had my druthers I’d have a more conventional blade, but this does fine.

I got mine used for around $50

And I plan to get a 556 Mini if ever I can!

    THANKS Man!

With the Springs breaking, that is not only the griptilian, any knife with the Axis lock will do that.
