Those are two very different knives, both are excellent in their categories.

Great video, bro, but benchmade does offer plain edge models with colored handles other than black..
By chrisw40, January 20, 2009 @ 4:12 pm
very nice

Very good review.
I’m expecting my partially-serrated Griptilian tomorrow.
Good advice on removing the black coating on the clip, that was the one unattractive thing about the knife.
Good video!

I have a dremmel, which end part did you use to take off the coating?
By DutchManDann, February 20, 2009 @ 4:39 pm
you took it apart? I alway keep my high quality knives, my cheap ones I don’t even want.
By holdenccc, February 20, 2009 @ 10:11 pm
yes, i needed bigger washers for bradley alias and mini skirmish.
there’s a reason some are cheap, i also try to get only expensive knives that i can trust

I don’t mind the black coated clip. It does start to rub off quick, I’d give it a year, but the dark coating makes it easier to hide. You do not want to broadcast the fact that you have a knife on your person.
By PittRules55, March 15, 2009 @ 1:57 pm
Would this make a good outdoor knife?
By fishycrackers11, March 27, 2009 @ 1:33 pm
where did you get yours?
By WiLLeWooD, May 26, 2009 @ 6:09 pm
Yeah it would.. i use mine for everything
By tacticalassasin9, June 1, 2009 @ 5:37 pm
I would think so. But every 1 has their own opinoin
By appletime101, June 9, 2009 @ 8:31 pm
did you get a custom blade for that cause i thought that the full size only came with the hole
By Ghost1321, June 11, 2009 @ 2:08 pm
Newer Griptilian knives are all CPM 154 and have thumb holes, older are CPM 154 and have thumb studs, if you get one that is about 4 years old or older they are 440C and have thumb studs
hope i helped

/agree the coating wont come completely off just have scratches and scruffs here and there. adds character while still stealthy. love my grippy
By neurad1, August 19, 2009 @ 5:20 pm
Weird. I bought one a few months ago new. Same as this knife.
By joeymcgovern6, August 19, 2009 @ 5:57 pm
The Benchmade 550 has the thumb hole, the 551 has the thumb stud. It has nothing to do with how old the knife is.
By derrickd803, October 9, 2009 @ 4:53 pm
Completely wrong there, newer are 154CM (not CPM154) you can get thumb studs OR a thumb hole (model # 551 and 550) the ones with 440C are older and have thumb holes/ovals or studs.
By DwightSchrood, October 14, 2009 @ 5:10 pm
154CM is not the same as CPM 154.

Where did you find that for less than $60? I have seen mini-grips on ebay for that but i haven’t seen a full-sized grip for less than 70. Where did you get yours?
By flabberdingle, December 19, 2009 @ 2:37 am
Knifeworks(dot)com has it for $62. That’s the lowest I’ve seen.
