Benchmade Ascent: Peak Performance

Once upon a time Benchmade had the perfect, high value EDC/lightweight tactical blade: The Ascent. At just 2.4 oz the Ascent is a great design. A nicely shaped, flat ground 3.5″ 440C blade, a strong lock back, fast deployment, tight lockup, perfect stonewash finish, and an excellent reversible pocket clip are the highppoints. And there’s not too many lows here: maybe just the pointy handle that might stick out of the pocket a bit while you’re carrying the Ascent. Wisely, BM chose to NOT put …

I really enjoy your videos. I am a huge fan of Benchmade. I would like to see you do a review on the Benchmade Monochrome Steirer Eisen knife. I have one I have carried every day for over a year and it has served me very well. I would be interested in your opinon of it.

Wow! Great review and awesome features for a $40-50 knife. It’s too bad I can only find the combo edge and thumbhole version.

Benchmade always seems to make the perfect knife and then they discontinue it IE:the AFCK.

I agree, the knife is top notch! I have the: 830SBT-BT2, The blade is: ATS-34. So I have the same handle but better blade with combo edge. I have had it on me for 11 plus years with no problems. For a combat tactical folder you can’t beat most Benchmade models!

You want the Thumb hole and combo edge. You will find that the plain straight edge won’t cut through everything. Where the serrated edge will. Where there is rope or seat belt, trust me you want a combo edge!

I need no knife…I have three 12 inch blades that come out of my knuckles on each hand!

This is not to be confused with the Ascent II knives I see in various places?

I’ve got the original Benchmade Eclipse… ATS-34 steel, round hole, and same style as the more expensive AFCK, but with plastic handle instead of G10.

Of course, I still have a real AFCK (806D2) for EDC, but the Eclipse still had its duties for opening mail and boxes.

Hi nutnfancy. Do your sons carry knives?

  • By GraysonKelly09, March 26, 2009 @ 4:46 pm

Thank you! I have been looking for a review for this knife for months and just found yours. I actually have the 830 model with thumb hole. Couldn’t find any “user” reviews on it. I carry it as an EDC. Quick question, any idea on how to make it deploy a little faster? It’s not the torx screw that is causing it to pause, it almost sticks after 90 degrees. Thanks again!

5:29 – you can remove the lock release button by pushing the steel rod through using a small screwdriver.

I own the clip point ats-34 version

    Thank you for review.
I have limited version of this knife i.e. 835-07/00. It’s a great knife with top notch steel.
