Benchmade 940: Best Tactical or EDC Choice
If there’s a right way to make a manual folding tactical or hunting knife this is it: The outstanding Benchmade Osborne Axis 940 series of knives. All makers take note of these knives: ultra fast and easy deployment due to perfect pivot construction and balance. Who needs an auto with deployment speed like this. It really doesn’t get any better than this. Add superior construction throughout, rock solid lock up, great 154CM blade steel, a cool purple titanium spacer on the back, strong clip …

yes, youre right too. A fighter knife is more focused so little less EDC. Its heavier, loger, fixed, etc. But i think that Horseman is more balanced between an EDC utility and a fighter. Probably 940 is better as utility cause its lighter/more durable steel,an “could be” used for defense, but for me, a good tactical folder must have more fightability. Not necesarily double edged but good pommel for punyo aplications, diferent styles of fast deployment, little more guard for secure stabing, etc.

You have over $700 spent in just one model group. Wow I gotta join the military if they are paying that kinda coin. Excellent review though. I bought my 943 because of this review and my 940 just arrived today. So Benchmade has you to thank for another $300 in sales. I only came to your page looking for a review of the Leatherman Charge TI so it’s not like you could say I would have bought a Benchmade knife whether I’d seen your review or not because I wouldn’t have.

The sorry thing about those BM 94x knives is that at that price, not many of us can afford to actually use them. What we can do is just carry them and show them off, possibly doing light tasks. Shallots on the other hand, being around $40 have an advantage of actually being useful. I have several benchmades but still choose to carry the Shallot more often than any of the BMs (also due to how slim the Shallot is).

Just got the knife and found the review to be right on. The action is equal to that of an assisted open knife. I just wish I had the limited edition red handle.

some people think that this is a useful normal carry knife and a $500 custom is too nice to use, just depends on the person.

Your loss for not using your 940. I use mine for everything except food prep

Totally. I don’t carry a blade for EDC so I look at knives as a purely defensive tool too. How do you like your horseman? Its one of the only blades I’ve looked at that has a really good choil for your front finger

I’ve had the 940SBK (black-coated/serrated version) for years and this is my overall favorite knife. Very light but extremely strong, solid, durable, sharp–and above all else–functional.

I am torn between a benchmade 940 and a SOG flash 2.
By Richiebigdaddy, October 31, 2009 @ 5:33 pm
I just received one of these (S30v) version and the blade was as sharp as a butter knife! I couldn’t believe it! For something that costs this much and having this kind of steel and being brand new I was totally dissapointed with the blade edge right out of the box! Has anyone experienced this problem?Either I just got a bad one or Benchmades quality control has gone to shit!

if your going for tactical or combat i suggest 940. edc maybe the sog flash two. personally i carry a tactical knife(such as 940) and a smaller edc blade like the sog flash 1(amazing edc) if you want assisted opening though go for flash two

Stating personal opinion as fact is about the dumbest thing a person can do. As ZBs post was in ref to a tactical app, your argument of s30v vs 154cm is pretty much mute. Even for EDC, 154cm is fine, if you dont mind more freq touch ups. As far as axis vs liner? I love the smoothness of axis and wont ague against its strength. Buuuut, my liner lock has never failed me. A deep choil; thumb wave; functional gimping; g10. The 940 has none of this. How does a superior grip only help in stabbing?

The leading statement in my previous post was just a constructive criticism. Please take it as such. Where in my post did I state that any of my opinions were absolute fact? The use of the word “period” in yours, sure does
Your response neither defends your position or disputes mine. It appears that you concede, but you just want to be a jerk about it.

Anybody looking at the 940 series should take a strong look at the 930 Kulgera.

I bought the 940 axis 2 months ago and have had time to really give it some hard use. I can honestly say that this folding knife is the best i have ever owned. the grip isn’t great for stabbing true BUT i don’t but knifes with the intention to cut someone up. anyways great knife highly recommended to anyone.
