Benchmade 585 Mini-Barrage Close-Up

Here’s a close up view of the new Benchmade 585 Mini-Barrage. This is a spring assisted opening knife. This is the first Axis Assist model to be made. There have been Auto-Axis, but never an assisted model. I like it, the assist is adequately strong. The overall quality and feel of the knife is very good. I would give it 4 3/4 stars out of 5. I really like the thick stainless steel liners in this knife, which are skeletonized nicely. I would like to have seen a more solid scale material, although the Valox seems tough, it still sounds a bit hollow when you tap on it with your fingernail. I would like to see a G10 or aluminum scale model in the future(or both!). How about a scale upgrade kit Benchmade! I bought this one from www.knifeworks.com Another good place is www.gpknives.com

oh ok loll thx! Hey i was just wondering, would you recommend the spyderco tenacious or would you have any other knife (made by spyderco)
That could be good for EDC and tactical use?
    thanks! :D

The Tenacious is a great knife. Especially considering the price. But, it’s too large for me to EDC. It’s a matter of preference. Tactical? – it’s hard to say, I don’t use my knives in that way. The Tenacious is my only Spyderco(so far) and they are great, but Benchmade is my favorite brand right now. IMO, the Mini-Barrage and Mini-Griptilian are the perfect size EDC knife. It’s small enough to EDC comfortably, but big enough to be useful. Please keep in mind, I am NOT a knife expert.

does the tanto griptilian have assisted opening?

  • By streetmaster63, March 7, 2009 @ 4:18 am

No. None of the Griptilians have assisted opening. If you go to Benchmade’s site, or any site that sells Benchmades, you can find out anything you want to know about all the different models and their features.

Pretty cool. Do you think the handle is roomier than the mini grip?

  • By martinaee, March 12, 2009 @ 5:19 pm

Sweet knife. I like the idea of the full size when it comes out. This knife reminds me of a sog flash for some reason. The flash is one of my favorites, but I wish it had steel liners. This one does, but it will be heavier.

  • By streetmaster63, March 12, 2009 @ 6:44 pm

The SOG Flash is nice, but I like the quality feel of the 585. I don’t even remember it’s in my pocket until I need a knife. It’s not as heavy as you think. It doesn’t sound or feel hollow like the Flash

Can you open the knife up with the axis lock like how you can with the Mel Par Due (sorry if i dont spell that right) Benchmade.

  • By streetmaster63, March 14, 2009 @ 2:19 pm

No, you have to use the thumb stud. Even if you release the Axis, the blade still stays closed until you push it open with the thumb stud. You can’t flick it open. It’s just like any other spring assisted knife, but it uses the Axis for the locking mechanism.

Do u recommend this knife for the price range? Should I get this knife?

  • By streetmaster63, March 15, 2009 @ 5:39 pm

Yes I recommend it. That’s entirely up to you.

  • By streetmaster63, March 17, 2009 @ 6:40 am

CORRECTION: I was wrong. The 585 CAN be flicked open like other Axis Lock knives. It takes a little more force to do it, but it can be done. I might put up a video showing how it works…

Ok sweet thank you for answering my questions.

  • By streetmaster63, March 21, 2009 @ 6:36 pm

Severator, sorry I failed to answer you right away. Somehow I missed your post.

Yes, the handle is a little thicker and longer than the Mini-Grip. It’s a bit more noticeable in the pocket, meaning you can feel it there more. In the hand, the grip feels a tiny bit more comfortable. But that doesn’t mean the 585 is uncomfortable either. There is NO gimping on the 585, don’t know how I feel about that.

    Thanks for commenting.

I personally don’t like this knife at all.

it has the same length blade as a mini-grip, but its fatter, weighs more, and adds assisted opening which is totally not needed for the Axis lock in my opinion.

if someone’s looking for a step up from the grips, I’d probably recommend the 942/943 series.

  • By streetmaster63, April 17, 2009 @ 6:45 pm

That’s ok, you don’t have to like it. The 942/943 series are superb knives, but much more expensive than the 585. They are a large step up from the grips. Not everyone can afford to spend $130 on a folder. I paid $78 for my 585, it’s still a great knife for it’s mid-range price. The assist isn’t necessary, but it’s still fun. If you want a decent knife in the same price range as the Mini-Grip, try the 527 Mini Presidio Ultra, can’t loose on that one.

Hey streetmaster63, I’m essentially looking for an assisted knife that is similar to the sog flash II but has steel liners. Is this knife up to the challenge?

  • By streetmaster63, May 10, 2009 @ 10:53 am

Oh hell yes. Of course it’ll be heavier than the SOG because it’s much more solid built. The blade steel on the 585(580-large version) is better quality than the AUS8 the SOG Flash uses. Also, the lock-up on the Benchmade is rock solid, no blade-play in any direction. It’s well worth the extra money if the extra weight doesn’t bother you. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

My Mini Barrage broke after four months. I can barely open the knife now.

  • By streetmaster63, July 9, 2009 @ 1:28 pm

Contact Benchmade, they will repair it.

  • By leftnose, December 17, 2009 @ 8:13 am

@streetmaster63 Where did you find the 585 for $78? The cheapese I can find it for now is ~$105.

  • By streetmaster63, December 17, 2009 @ 12:19 pm

@leftnose I got it from knifeworks, but I think they’re out of stock at the moment.

  • By blueboxshop, January 15, 2010 @ 1:09 pm
