I've handled both the 580 and 585 and both are excellent. I went with the 580 for the size, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to you. The larger blade snaps open with authority just like the 585, maybe *slightly* slower because it's larger and heaver, but still impressive speed.

Hey man, I have a 585 Mini Barrage, but I've been looking at getting the larger 580. What are your thoughts on the larger 585 vs. 580. I like the small feel of the mini, but I need a knife that's a bit larger with a longer blade. I can't find any local shops with the larger one, so I'm afraid of purchasing online sight-unseen.

Thanks

Actually Spyderco makes some decent knives but Benchmade typically uses better steel. Spyderco uses 440C which is decent standard pocket knife steel while Benchmade uses 154CM which is stronger then the 440s (A,B, and C) and S30V which is the strongest steel typically used in pocket knives. Anything harder then that (S90V) they become almost impossible to sharpen and can't be given as sharp of an edge.

benchmade is great but your next knife you might want to think about getting a spyderco because they generally make even better blades and are also very well built
